Medicare Supplement (Medigap) Plans in Waco, TX
Original Medicare pays most of your hospital and doctor bills, but not all of them. A Medicare Supplement plan — often called Medigap — picks up the deductibles, coinsurance and copays Medicare leaves behind, so your yearly cost is close to fixed.
Medigap is standardized by letter, which means a Plan G from one company pays exactly the same benefits as a Plan G from another. The only real differences are price, service and how the company handles rate increases over time.
- Keep any doctor who takes Medicare
- Predictable monthly premium, few surprises
- No referrals and no provider network
- Travel coverage anywhere in the U.S.

How it works
Medicare pays first, your Medigap plan pays the rest
You keep Original Medicare (Part A and Part B) as your primary coverage. When you visit Baylor Scott & White Hillcrest, Ascension Providence or any clinic in McLennan County that accepts Medicare, the claim goes to Medicare first. Whatever share Medicare doesn't pay is automatically sent to your Medigap company, and most members never see a bill beyond the annual Part B deductible.
Because there is no network, you never have to check whether a specialist is "in plan." If they accept Medicare, you're covered — in Waco, in Dallas, or on a visit to see grandchildren out of state. Medigap does not include drug coverage, so most people pair it with a standalone Part D drug plan.
Compare
Plan G vs. Plan N vs. High-Deductible Plan G
| Plan | Monthly premium | What you pay | Best suited for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Plan G | Highest of the three | Only the annual Part B deductible | People who want the fewest bills and the most predictable year |
| Plan N | Moderate | Part B deductible, small office and ER copays, possible excess charges | Healthy members who see doctors occasionally and want a lower premium |
| High-Deductible Plan G | Lowest | Full Plan G benefits after you meet a high annual deductible | Budget-focused members comfortable with more risk in a bad year |
Rates rise every year — the plan doesn't change
Medigap benefits are locked by law, so a rate increase is the only thing to watch. We re-shop your Plan G or Plan N each year to make sure you aren't paying a loyalty penalty for staying put.
Medigap does not include prescriptions
You'll want a separate Part D plan. Skipping it when you're first eligible can trigger a lifelong late penalty.
Timing
Your open enrollment window matters more than anything else
For six months beginning the month your Part B starts, you can buy any Medigap plan sold in Texas with no health questions at all. That is the one window where a diagnosis cannot raise your price or get you turned down.
After that window closes, Texas carriers may use medical underwriting. Most people still qualify, but conditions like recent heart procedures, oxygen use or insulin-dependent diabetes can limit choices. If you're turning 65, start the conversation about three months early.
- Six-month guaranteed-issue window starts with Part B
- No network, no referrals, no annual plan shopping
- Guaranteed renewable as long as you pay the premium
- Special guaranteed-issue rights apply if a plan leaves your area

Underwriting
Applying outside a protected period
Inside your six-month Medigap open enrollment window, or when a guaranteed-issue right applies, health questions are off the table. Outside those periods, Texas carriers may underwrite: they ask about diagnoses, procedures, medications and pending tests, and they can decline the application or offer a higher rate.
Guaranteed-issue rights exist in specific situations — your Advantage plan leaves the service area, an employer group plan ends, a carrier misled you, or you're inside the 12-month trial right after first joining an Advantage plan at 65. Those windows are short and easy to miss, which is why we ask about your history before we start an application rather than after it's declined.
If underwriting is likely to be a problem, we say so up front and look at Medicare Advantage instead of letting you collect a decline on your record.

Rate increases, travel, and the yearly re-shop
How Medigap rates change
Benefits are fixed by law, so the only thing that moves is price. Texas carriers typically price by attained age, meaning your premium rises as you get older and again when the carrier files a general increase. Two companies selling the identical Plan G can drift far apart over five years.
We re-check your premium each year against the other carriers we represent. Moving usually requires passing underwriting, so it's a decision to make while you're healthy — not after a diagnosis.
Travel and access
With Original Medicare behind it, Medigap works with any provider in the country who accepts Medicare. There's no out-of-area rule, no referral, and no network to check before you see a specialist in Dallas, Houston or out of state.
Some Medigap plans include limited foreign travel emergency coverage. It is capped and has a deductible — useful, but not a substitute for travel medical insurance on a long trip abroad.
